Family Therapy

For better or worse, we are all influenced by our family unit as well as the larger community and society around us. In working with families, I utilize Family Systems approach which is based on the idea that an individual is best understood by looking at his or her interactions with family members. In other words, for healing to occur, change may need to happen in relationships, not just within the individual.

I enjoy working with families and individuals from a systemic perspective because neither the individual nor the family is "blamed' for a particular dysfunction. Instead, we work together from a "big picture" perspective to enable individuals and the family to change in ways that will reduce their distress.

The number of sessions required varies, depending on the severity of the problems and the willingness of the members to participate in therapy. The family and I will set mutual goals and discuss the length of time expected to achieve the goals. Most family therapies tend to be short-term and solution focused, as changing the system can stimulate change very quickly. The main focus in our sessions is on here-and-now interactions in the family system. Extended 90-minute sessions are available to allow for more sharing and participation.
